I am currently the Chief Program Officer, Science at the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.  Between 1997 and 2003 when I joined the Moore Foundation I worked in the Biotechnology industry at Chiron Corporation and later at ValiGen in Paris, France.

From 1992 to 1997 I was on the faculty at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where I was an Associate Dean of the School of Medicine, Director of the Division of Biomedical Information Sciences, the Genome Data Base, and the Welch Biomedical Library. I also was the Chief Information Officer for Johns Hopkins University.  Prior to joining the JHU faculty I was Professor of Microbiology at George Washington University.

Between 1984 and 1988 I served as the Assistant Director for Biological, Behavioral and Social Sciences at the National Science Foundation, and was Acting Director for several months in 1984.  At the time of my appointment to the NSF I was Professor of Virology at the University of California, Berkeley.  While at NSF I served as the Chair of two White House committees on biotechnology policy and regulation.

I received my Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego following three years active duty in the Navy.  I got my  Bachelors and Masters Degree from the University of Washington.  My research has focused on the genetics and biochemistry of viruses and more recently "Computational Biology."

Two years ago we bought our retirement home on the North Fork of the Skagit River just upstream from La Conner and we expect to be there full time in early 2009.

Happily married 46 yrs. now to my beautiful wife Alice who i meet while attending W.W.U. after high school. We've been blessed with one son- 37, one daughter-35 and one grandson- 10.  I retired 3 years ago in 2005 after 37 great years as the head coach of the mens basketball program at Edmonds C.C. and now i'm a part time consultant when i'm not playing golf! I'm now living in my dream home I built on the beach looking across the water at Mt. Baker up near Bellingham WA.
